Recently I came accross a website that looked like it had created flash files for all of it’s header tags (H1, H2, H3, H4, H5). This at first wasn’t very unusual, however the web designer in me looked into the coding further and noticed that the HTML had all the header tags within the coding.

I then researched this and found that they were using something called SIFR – Scalable Inman Flash Replacement. One of the main reasons that this interested me is that you can include any font you wish and this will show on any users computer, even if they don’t have the font installed on their desktop.

Me personally I have always tried to avoid flash where I can purely for SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) reasons. SIFR however allows the designer to keep the header tags within the page. It uses javascript to replace the tag with the flash file. If a user does not have flash or javascript enabled then the normal header tags are displayed which means the script degrades very gracefully.

I have used SIFR on the homepage of this website – www.websitedesignderby.com but if you would like further information please check out the official website – http://www.mikeindustries.com/blog/sifr/

Hello and welcome to the new website design for JWP Computer Services (Web).

For a while we have been meaning to get something up and running, but i’m sure your all aware that customers websites take full priority. Over the last few months we have learnt some new tricks and skills which we have tried to incorporate into this new design.

This blog is also something new for us. We have recently started designing for E-Commerce and CMS (Content Management System) websites and while we were at it we thought we’d look into WordPress. WordPress is something that I personally have been wanting to learn and get to grips with, and i must say i’m very impressed.

I found it very easy to install and also to theme. Although after a few hours of looking through the code and at first being pretty puzzled I got the hang of it and now understand the basics, which i will now build on. So hopefully sometime in the near future I will be 100% confident!

Over the next weeks and months we will endevour to get new posts added including posts that offer tips and tricks regarding website design so please check back soon.
