W3C Compliancy, why do it? - June 16th, 2010

At Website Design Derby we make ongoing efforts to improve the level of professionalism and reliability with regards to website design and end results. While there are many developers who easily make such claims, there are only a small handful of website designers who are able to back this up.

It is common practice in web development to check, check and double check a website before publishing it, quite simply this can be done as easy as spellchecking the website and visually scanning it over to ensure it looks and feels right, but is this enough?

Most websites appear visually ok when browsing from the standard Internet Explorer in the screen resolution of 1024 x 768, but when the browsers environment differs the cracks begin to show.

Most internet users now use Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome over Internet Explorer and even more people are using widescreen monitors and mobile devices to browse the internet, this is where most websites are really put to the test, mainly because each browser and device will interpret web programming languages and graphics differently, thus giving errors, visual problems and sometimes prevent users browsing the website altogether.

With a bit of time and effort, this can be avoided with the help of the W3C Consortium, who make ongoing efforts to scan and comply websites looking for poor or lazy coding found commonly when corners have been cut to maximise profits.

By ignoring these web development standards you can indirectly dismissing a high volume of visitors to your website can will directly reflecting sales and interest in your products or services, worst still, most website customers are unaware this is an issue and so few as 4.13% of websites are complaint to W3C Standards.

A majority of companies offer to design your website compliant to these standards at an additional cost, at Website Design Derby our staff are highly skilled and aim to comply all our websites by default and at no extra cost to yourself.

Poor website design can crucially effect how your visitors use your website. We believe there should be no technical reason why customers fail to make good use of your website, that is why our service is second to none.

You can find out if your website is w3c compliant by entering your website address into the W3C Validator online and free.

My Thoughts on Twitter - June 10th, 2010

Twitter has been around for quite some time and has become a powerhouse in the social networking world. For a long time I didn’t want to use the service as I wasn’t quite sure what the point of Twitter was. To me it was a website that incorporated the Facebook status update but added a bit of glitter.

However since running a blog it became apparent that Twitter suddenly had a use. I regularly have a list of website blogs that I check daily and come across interesting articles that would be nice to promote to of website designers. This is where Twitter becomes useful as it’s not enough information to create a blog post about one interesting article but with Twitter within the permitted 140 characters I can spread the word to other web designers.

I now regularly check Twitter for the latest “tweets” and have become very attached with … Read More.

Search Engine Optimisation – A Word of Warning - June 4th, 2010

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) has fast grown into one of the most important parts of a company’s web campaign.

During the 1990s before the emergence of Google there were a few main search engines such as Alta Vista, Yahoo and Excite. These indexed websites via basic (compared with today) algorithms that mainly looked at keywords/description tags, the number of key phrases within each page and other parts of a HTML page.

Today however, since Google started dominating the market other search engines are now trying to play catch-up. Google has deployed complex and closely guarded algorithms which look at many different aspects of a website to determine the placement in their Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs). SEO as a result has become a science in itself with many companies adopting different tactics to try and get their clients websites high in the SERPs for specific keywords.

Without SEO a website would struggle … Read More.
